Colchester and District Archery Club held their annual Bill Tucker Memorial Tournament on 6th May 2019. The event invited archers from all over the southern counties to compete in York, Hereford and Western rounds. It was announced that this would be the last tournament hosted by CADAC at this venue as they await an permanent move to brand new facilities in 2020.

Representing Braintree Bowmen on the day were Ian Bugbee in the the York, James and Jo Moir in the Hereford, Sam Moir in the Western and Ben Moir in the Short Western.

To say that conditions were challenging would be a huge understatement. Having arrived at the ground first thing the temperature was barely above 7C and with a brisk bitter wind it felt much colder. Unfortunately the temperature did not improve greatly throughout the day and despite pockets of the sun breaking through the clouds the temperature never made it to double figures. Swirling winds and gusty conditions made it very tricky for all competitors and whether you were shooting at 100 yards or at 40 yards maximum concentration and skill was required to try to get your arrows anywhere near the centre of the target.

Despite the trying conditions our Braintree archers prevailed. Ian battled his way to a very creditable 829 in his York round. James took Silver in the Gents Hereford having missed out on Gold by a mere 9 points from his 965 final score. Jo took Gold in the ladies equivalent and was also awarded the Ladies Hereford Cup. Sam also took Gold in the Junior Boy's Western Division but was slightly eclipsed by his brother's score and Gold medal in the Junior Boy's Short Western competition. Ben's score of 758 was truly impressive especially given the very difficult conditions on the day.

To round the day off Jo and Ian also picked up the Team Gold and Team Shield for their combined scores in the York and Hereford rounds.

All in all a very chilly, blustery but rewarding day!

Well done to everyone that took part.
